Textfyre is announcing that Paul O’Brian will be designing a new science fiction series. Christopher Huang will be putting prose to Paul’s designs. Welcome aboard Paul and Chris!


July Update

We’ve passed a huge milestone this month. Mike Gentry has completed the first full draft of the first game scheduled for release and the design has been sent to the programmer. We should have an alpha version in a few weeks.

Congratulations and thanks go to Michael Gentry for his hard work and help in getting Textfyre off the ground.

Ian Finley is well into the Klockwerk design.

We’re working on signing up a third design and writing team. I’m hoping to announce this team soon, but negotiations are slow.

The start-up business plan for Textfyre is complete and I’m beginning to share it with our business advisors.

The target date for our first release is now winter, but that’s the life of a start-up. We’re not slipping a schedule because things are going wrong. It’s simply happening because the start-up phase is taking a long time. We’re not cutting any corners or rushing anything. We’re doing things the way we planned to do them and the only thing we can’t control is the amount of time people can spend on a project outside of their regular lives. I’m intent on building a healthy virtual business model that favors art and craft over deadlines and suits.

I think we should be beta-testing the first game by the middle of August and it should be ready for UI integration in September. We then have a lot of work to do to make it ready for the public and I’m estimating that to take a couple of months. So the best estimate for Textfyre’s first release is coming out to sometime around November or December.

I estimate that once our processes have all shaken out and are well known and practiced, we should be able to get a new game developed from stem to stern in about four months, possibly even less.

As Textfyre continues to move forward, it’s been exciting to see the interaction of all of the people that have become a part of the business. Although Textfyre can’t afford to hire anyone full-time at this time, we still have managed to find talented and passionate people to work on various aspects of the business.

One of the things I’m very excited to see is the interaction between these people (and myself). Through e-mails and instant messenger and even in person, there has been a great excitement to do things well and build this company for a long run. More than anything, to date, this is the most gratifying aspect of starting this endeavor.

In a few recent interactions I can honestly say that I was thinking to myself, “this is what it must have been like at Infocom”.
